The Communications Research Laboratory of Japan's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications is pursuing a 10 year program of CRL middle atmospheric studies that has added significant research capabilities to the range. Researchers from CRL are working closely with the Geophysical Institute in placing scientific instruments at PFRR, including an imaging riometer, MF radar, millimeter-wave radiometer, and a variety of optical instruments.
NASA satellite downlink assets that are at the range include the Transportable Orbital Tracking System (TOTS) which can provide scientific data downlink in the S-Band from polar orbiting satellites.
Many other groups based at the Geophysical Institute are involved in diverse research areas including space physics, atmospheric science, remote sensing, and earth sciences.
PFRR features state-of-the art facilities and support equipment for experimental work, including:
